The second Grand Slam of the tennis season is one of the most gruelling on the circuit and comes live from Roland Garros over two weeks stretching across May and June.

Players participate on the clay surface, which some players prefer to play on. However, some of the player’s dislike the surface and that is shown in the Roland Garros odds.

The French Open is the premier event on the clay surface and is much different compared to the other three Grand Slams of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open.

Over the years the French Open has played its part in some of the most significant rivalries on court, but what could the 2019 edition include?

Men’s draw in Roland Garros 2019

The dominance of Rafael Nadal on the clay surface is unprecedented, and that is highlighted in the French Open odds with every bookmaker. The Spaniard will begin the competition as the heavy favourite to add to his eleven singles titles; while he will be looking for his third victory on the bounce.

Novak Djokovic will be looking for his second French Open title, and he is the second favourite in the Roland Garros odds to do so. However, his clay record is far inferior to his career on the grass and hard courts. The one player that could potentially cause a shock is Dominic Thiem.

The Austrian likes the clay surface and reached the final of last year’s French Open before losing to Nadal in straight sets. The 24-year-old will start the French Open ranked fourth in the world, and there is a feeling that he will win his first Grand Slam at some point this season.

However, his preparation hasn’t been ideal. He was knocked out of the Italian Open by Fernando Verdasco at the beginning of May. Therefore, it is nearly impossible to look past Nadal to conquer his opponents on clay once again.

Men’s draw winner prediction: Rafael Nadal

Dark horse (to reach semis): Fabio Fognini, Diego Schwartzman.
Both have always shined on clay and Fognini has fresh taste of victory.

Women’s draw in Roland Garros 2019

The women’s side of the draw couldn’t be more contrasting to that of the men’s. There is an open feeling to women’s tennis like never before, and that should be celebrated.

Simona Halep will head the French Open odds with bookmakers’, as she looks to win back-to-back French Opens following her win in last year’s final against Sloane Stephens. However, it won’t be an easy assignment as no woman has regained their crown since Justine Henin-Hardenne in 2007.

Last year’s runner up will attempt to replicate Halep’s feat and become the sixth women to come runner up before winning the event the following year.

Other leading contenders in the Roland Garros odds include Kiki Bertens, Karolina Pilskova and Petra Kvitova. But realistically there are at least nine women that could claim that they have a chance and much will depend on how the draw plans out.

An each way bet could be the perfect way to utilise the French Open odds fully; meaning that punters will get some returns should their pick come runner up, and in a competitive market, it isn’t the worst option.

Women’s draw winner prediction: Naomi Osaka (Each Way)

Dark horse (to reach semis): Johanna Konta and Asleigh Barty.
With recent clay glory Konta is really feeling it. Barty comes to this years French Open tournament with much more confidence.
